Getting to Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne is well connected by air, rail, and road, making it straightforward to reach from across the UK and internationally. The city centre and Northumbria University are compact and walkable once you arrive. Use Traveline or National Travel Summary for end-to-end journey planning across all modes.

By Air

Newcastle International Airport (NCL) is the region’s main airport, with direct flights from major European cities and domestic connections across the UK. It is served by airlines including Ryanair, easyJet, Emirates and KLM, among others.

Getting from the airport to the city centre is easy: the Metro runs directly from the airport to Newcastle city centre in around 25 minutes. Trains run every 12 minutes and stop at key stations including Monument and Central Station.

From London, Newcastle is approximately 2 hours 45 minutes by direct train (see Rail section below). Edinburgh Airport (EDI) also offers good connections and is around 1.5 hours from Newcastle by train.

By Rail

Newcastle Central Station is one of the UK’s best-connected rail hubs, sitting on the East Coast Main Line. Direct services include:

  • London King’s Cross: approximately 2 hours 45 minutes (LNER / Lumo)
  • Edinburgh: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes (LNER / Lumo)
  • Manchester: approximately 2 hours 15 minutes (TransPennine Express)
  • Birmingham: approximately 3 hours (CrossCountry)

From the station, Northumbria University’s City Campus is around a 10-minute walk.

By Road

Newcastle is accessible via the A1(M) from the south and north, and the A69 from the west. The city has several park-and-ride options and car parks near the centre.
Parking at Northumbria University is limited; we recommend arriving by public transport where possible. The city centre is compact and well served by the Metro and local buses.

Newcastle’s Metro network connects the airport, Central Station, and many parts of the city. A day ticket offers good value for exploring. Nexus Metro has route maps and timetables.
