This project launch and workshop will be held at the Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle. We welcome anyone who is interested in sharing opinions, knowledge or personal experiences on gender-inclusive planning to join us for the workshop, we will start the session with film clips on female experience in the world’s metropolises, which includes: Breakfast at Tiffanys (1961); Run Lola Run (1998); Frances Ha (2012); Wadjda (2012); Kim Ji-young: Born 1982 (2019).
After watching each film, participants will be asked to complete a short survey. The survey invites them to identify key gender-related challenges in cities highlighted by the films, reflect on what a gender-inclusive city could look like, consider what this means for its users, and explore the core principles that should guide inclusive urban design.
The second part of the workshop invites participants to generate ideas that can inform future gender-inclusive planning and design in Newcastle. It aims to bridge the gap between policy and practice, and between intention and action, by encouraging the sharing of opinions and personal experiences. Participants are prompted to explore why and how gender inclusion should be integrated into urban planning and placemaking, particularly in the context of Newcastle’s ongoing City Centre Transformation Programme.
We aim to establish a framework of practical approaches, activities, and design guidelines that demonstrate how to implement participatory and inclusive design principles, taking into account the experiences and needs of all city residents.
