This project launch and workshop will be held at the Star and Shadow Cinema, Newcastle. We welcome anyone who is interested in sharing opinions, knowledge or personal experiences on gender-inclusive planning to join us for the workshop, we will start the session with film clips on female experience in the world’s metropolises, which includes: Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961); Run Lola Run (1998); Frances Ha (2012); Wadjda (2012); Kim Ji-young: Born 1982 (2019).
A short survey will be delivered after watching each film, we will ask the participants to identify some fundamental ‘problems’ on gender-related challenges in cities, which have been revealed in these films. We will question what a gender-inclusive city might be, what this means for those using it, and what are the fundamental principles to follow.
The second part of the workshop session encourages ideas which contribute to future gender-inclusive planning and design at Newcastle. It seeks to fill the clear gap between policy and practice, intention and action, by sharing opinions and personal experience, by questioning why and how to incorporate gender inclusion into urban planning and place design, following the current City Centre Transformation Programme at Newcastle.
We hope to set out a framework for practical approaches, activities, and design guidelines that show how to do this – how to implement participatory and inclusive design principles that explore the experiences and uses of the city from the perspective of all citizens.
