The main funding in the UK for research comes from UKRI (UK Research and Innovation). This has a number of research councils under it, each with a different remit. Innovate UK, EPSRC and ESRC are often the most relevant ones for research in digital and connected construction. Innovate UK offers funding for Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, and both universities have a track record of funded projects in this area. There are other sources of funding too, such as the Leverhulme Trust and the Royal Academy of Engineering which includes industrial fellowships. Universities also can offer collaborative PhD schemes where industry and academia co-fund a PhD project. For example, see Northumbria’s scheme and Newcastle’s Doctoral College.
