Demystifying the Dolphin: Unpacking our playful learning design framework

If you have been looking at our playful learning design framework and have the following questions: How do I do a playful redesign? What are the steps? Why is it a dolphin? Look no further.

This blog post is going to demystify the dolphin and break down our playful learning framework for people who (like me) might need a different perspective with lists and checkboxes of the framework.

What is the framework?

The replay learning design framework is a set of tools that have been created to aid you to integrate playful learning into your teaching practice. Our process has several stages, and each one has accompanying resources, all to help you (yes you!) do a playful re-design of an academic module/course.

I am not part of RE:PLAY, can I use this framework?

Yes! This framework is designed to facilitate educators in (re)designing their courses to utilise playful learning approaches. Although our REPLAY fellows are using these tools, the tools and approaches are suitable for all academics; whether you are working alone, in a team, or with the support of a learning designer at your own institution.

OK, I want to learn more, what is this framework?

The framework is made up of 7 steps:

  1. Reimagine what is possible
  2. Take a reality check to identify constraints and what is feasible
  3. Redesign the module/class you want to teach – exploring what playful approaches you think are appropriate and how you would like to use them
  4. Realise the module by developing tools and artefacts needed to teach it
  5. Reboot and reflect: run the module, reflect on the outcomes whilst responding to feedback
  6. Research the effects of adding play to the module, and evidence where those changes have taken place
  7. Rejoice on what worked well and consider what could have gone better.

Ok, I now know the steps, do I just follow that like a recipe?

Sort of, this is not a linear process… some elements will end up being repeated until you are happy with the class you have designed, if you look at the image below you can see the process involves a lot of introspection and decision making to know what is the right playful approach for your class.

The stages of doing the re-design process, with thoughts along the way.

Right, so how do I do it?

Head over to our page didicated to the learning design framework (here). For each stage you can see the learning outcomes for you, the educator, for what you will learn by engaging in the process. You can also access resources tailored to help you through each stage. Work through them, engage in personal reflection along the way, and before you know it you will have a re-designed module and will have become a playful practitioner.

If you have any quuestions during the process you can contact a member of our team (here).

For now, goodbye, good luck, and have fun!
