Placements and Industry Partners

Industrial involvement lies at the heart of this CDT and we have built strong, meaningful links with over 40 organisations. NUdata is supported by a portfolio of industrial partners, including large/multinational companies, SMEs, Government and not-for profit organisations, and international humanitarian organisations. Links with our industrial partners will ensure that knowledge and skills flow across all relevant sectors. We are delighted to have a large, broad portfolio of external partners across a variety of sectors.

Placements

At least six months of each PhD will be spent in one or more private, public or third-sector organisations engaged in the development and/or use of data intensive science techniques. Each placement will be designed to enable students to gain additional expertise in data intensive science and develop a broader understanding on the wider uses of data intensive techniques and their application. All placements (with the exception of the Met Office) will explicitly *not* be in the area of STFC science; instead, each placement is designed to enable students to gain additional expertise in data intensive science and develop a broader understanding on the wider uses of data intensive techniques and their application. Thus, upon graduation NUdata students will have the distinct privilege of choosing whether they become leaders in academia or industry. NUdata has more partners and placement offers than we will have students in our CDT; therefore, students will have many options to fit their interests and skills.

Through conversations with our partner organisations, most would like students who have already had significant training and experience with data science and programming. Therefore, we anticipate that students will do their placement in their 3rd or 4th year, though this will be tailored to each student/partner organisation’s needs. External placements and students will be matched, in the first instance, using the CDT Week, which will run for 2-3 years before the first cohort start their placements, giving ample opportunity to identify potential synergies between thesis projects and partner organisation’s placements.

Through our numerous partners, we have many offers of potential placement opportunities. Thus, there is no need for applicants to organise their own placement – we will do this for you and, given there are many more placement opportunities than CDT students, there will be ample student choice for your individual placement.
