The Room of the Future

The Room of the Future was designed by the Interaction Research Studio for the new gallery ‘Rooms Through Time: 1878 – 2049’ at the Museum of the Home in East London.

The project evolved from an open-ended speculative process, focusing on small, disjointed stories of the future, covering topics like climate change, geopolitics, London, and Hackney, rather than presenting a singular, all-encompassing view. To picture these future scenarios, we developed a set of characters: an intergenerational family of five that guided us in designing the items in their home, such as a memory intensification system, a farm-free protein-producing appliance, and a window offering a glimpse of what the East London might look like in 25 years.

The Room of the Future is conceived as a dynamic, evolving space, to be updated over the ten-year life of the exhibition with interactive artifacts reflecting societal and technological changes.
