Project publication on (anti-)environmental governance

We are delighted to share news of the first HESG project publication! Together with Elena Kochetkova, our team member Doubravka Olšáková has put together a new forum for the Journal of Modern European History, entitled ‘Zero Growth, Socialist Modernity, and the Anti-Environmental Turn in Eastern Europe’. The publication brings together a series of short pieces that jointly explore the historical roots of contemporary (anti-)environmental governance in Eastern Europe. Featuring work from eight scholars and cases from the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, the GDR and Yugoslavia, the forum asks how state-socialist ideas of economic growth, scientific expertise and the management of nature shaped approaches to environmental limits – and how some of these assumptions were transformed ,rather than simply abandoned after 1989. In this way, the forum connects the history of socialist modernity with present-day local tensions between economic growth, environmental governance and the green transition.
