Award recognition for GLO team member Matt Robertshaw

Matt Robertshaw – who is the Canada-based Research Fellow on our GLO project – has received a major recognition: the Canadian Historical Association / Société historique du Canada (CHA / SHC) has named him as the runner-up for its John Bullen Prize. The prize is awarded on an annual basis, in recognition of “the outstanding PhD thesis on a historical topic submitted in a Canadian university”.

Matt’s PhD thesis, which is now under contract for publication with McGill–Queen’s University Press, is entitled “A Longing for Saint-Domingue / A Longing for Haiti: Haiti and the Rise and Fall of French Africa”. In the “honorable mention” citation for Matt, the CHA / SHC describes Matt’s study as a “highly original and engaging work” that “will re-cast French colonial history, Haitian studies, and the history of Black internationalism for some time to come”.
