Newton International Fellowships: 2018 Call Now Open

The latest call for Newton International Fellowships, released yesterday by the British Academy, Royal Society and the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or expect to obtain one by the time funding starts) and not be UK citizens and be working outside of the UK at the time of application. In addition, applicants should have no more than 7 years of active, full-time postdoctoral experience at the time of application, discounting career breaks. Applicants should not have done their PhD at the institution they are applying to.

The opportunity covers the full range of subjects covered by the three funders, including engineering, computer science, earth and environmental sciences, pure/applied mathematics, human geography, astronomy and physics (see p2 of the scheme notes for full details).

The funding is to pay for their subsistence costs for a two-year full-time fellowship appointment (up to £24k/annum as a tax exempt stipend), up to £8k/annum for consumables, a one-off £2k relocation payment in year one, as well as a contribution to institutional overheads.

This is a highly competitive scheme, but if you know of a good quality candidate with an excellent research track record who is keen to work here, then it may be a good opportunity to apply for. The application deadline is 27th March 2018 at 3pm.

GCRF Networking Grants Now Available

The Academy of Medical Sciences, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering and Royal Society have jointly launched a new call for Global Challenges Research Fund Networking Grants.

The scheme allows researchers from across disciplines and from developing countries and the UK to hold networking events, to forge new links and generate innovative transdisciplinary research ideas to address global challenges. We expect that these new networks will then be better equipped to apply for larger grants offered by the GCRF programme and other funding initiatives.

This is an excellent opportunity for those who are starting to build networks with researchers and stakeholders in DAC List countries. The awards provide up to £25,000 over one year to hold networking events, supporting these collaborations.

The deadline for applications for this round is 21st March 2018. Successful projects must start between 1st July and 30th September 2018 and last for one year. Further details are available on the call page. Please contact us at an early stage if you are interested in applying.

UK Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowships – Royal Academy of Engineering

The Royal Academy of Engineering and the Government Office for Science have announced the latest round of the UK Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowships scheme. The deadline for applications is 26th March 2018.

The fellowships are targeted at early career academics without a current permanent lectureship and within 5 years of their PhD award. They provide funding for two years (with an optional third year pending a review at the end of Year 1) with full salary costs covered, plus travel and subsistence linked to the research, and modest items of equipment (up to £3k incl. VAT), consumables and other expenses which are fully justified in connection with carrying out the research.

The research may be on any one of the 13 topics identified for 2018 by the UK intelligence community. Further detail on these is given in the topic list:

EPSRC have recently issued two calls for expressions of interest for workshops:

  1. Building a Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing Community: “The workshop will be highly multidisciplinary as well as bringing together those who are developing platforms and standards with researchers deploying and evaluating in real world environments. Royal Society – Research Grants: Deadline 19th December 2017

The Royal Society has recently launched the latest round of their Research Grants scheme, with a closing date of 19th December 2017.

These awards provide up to £20k of ‘seed corn’ funding for early stage researchers for the purchase of specialised equipment, consumable materials and/or travel and subsistence for field research. The scheme covers all disciplines in the life and physical sciences (this includes engineering, computer sciences, earth sciences, and environmental sciences).

Northumbria staff: please send a near final draft of your proposal to your Faculty Research Funding and Policy Manager by 7th December 2017 at the latest so that we have time to do a basic review and check costs before sending for Faculty approval on the 12th December. If you are proposing to use the grant to purchase equipment, then please obtain a quote from a supplier (including VAT and any shipment costs) and include that in the documents you send over. You should also discuss any proposed equipment purchase with the relevant technical team.

Please ensure you meet the eligibility criteria outlined below before you start working on a proposal. If you are unsure or wish to discuss further, please get in touch:

  • Hold a PhD or equivalent qualification.
  • Be based at an eligible UK organisation and a UK resident at the time of application
  • Be within the first five consecutive years, at the time of application, of either:
    • their first permanent independent academic research post
    • a named limited-tenured/fixed-term academic research post, obtained in open competition (Note that tenure must cover the duration of the award).
  • Be fully independent researchers with access to their own lab space (in other words post-doc researchers funded by a grant on which someone else is PI are not eligible)

Horizon 2020 New Societal Challenges calls published

With thanks to UKRO for their summaries, the European Commission has published a raft of new Horizon 2020 calls for proposals for the period 2018-2020. This will include a number of Societal Challenges calls which are listed below. For further information click the links to the full call information on the H2020 Participant Portal. Regarding Brexit, please note that there will be no immediate changes to the UK’s participation in Horizon 2020 and the UK Government has reconfirmed that it guarantees to underwrite awards where the application is submitted before the UK’s departure from the EU and is subsequently approved. This includes proposals which are informed of their success but, at the point of exit, have not signed a grant agreement, and proposals which have been submitted before exit and that are only informed of their success following exit.

Call: Rural Renaissance

The Rural Renaissance call will enhance the natural, social, cultural and economic potential of rural areas (the term “rural” is understood in a wide sense and also includes peri-urban, remote, mountain and coastal areas, unless otherwise specified in the topic description) and support policy coherence. It will boost economic development, ecosystem services and entrepreneurial innovation. This will be achieved by building on diversification and modernisation strategies, improving governance models, supporting innovative food and non-food (non-food chains include wood) value chains, and capitalising on local assets, including human, natural and cultural capital.

Call: Blue Growth

The Blue Growth Call aims at sustainably harvesting the potential of resources from seas, oceans and inland waters for different uses and across the range of marine and maritime industries, while protecting biodiversity and enhancing climate resilience. It supports sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors through a responsible management of marine resources for healthy, productive, safe, secure and resilient seas and oceans, which are essential for thriving ecosystems, climate regulation, global food security, human health, livelihoods and economies.

Societal Challenge 3: Secure, clean and efficient energy.

Call: Building a low-carbon, climate resilient future

Achieving climate neutrality in the energy sector – while ensuring at the same time more efficient energy use, a secure supply of energy, affordable prices and low environmental impact – is a complex endeavour which requires R&I activities on multiple fronts.

Societal Challenge 4: Smart, green and integrated transport.

Call: Building a Low-Carbon, Climate resilient future: green vehicles

The Calls will focus on the most critical aspects supporting a massive introduction of electrified vehicles: 1) advances in electric batteries (production of elementary cells and pack assembly), 2) new architectures, concepts and components to support the advent of the 3rd generation of electrified vehicles, 3) improve the recharging experience from the view-point of the end-users, 4) supporting the competitiveness of European industries through the development of digitalised production environments and the use of advanced material, 5) addressing the urban dimension of introducing electrified vehicles.

– LC-GV-01-2018: Integrated, brand-independent architectures, components and systems for next generation electrified vehicles optimised for the infrastructure.
– LC-GV-02-2018: Virtual product development and production of all types of electrified vehicles and components.

Both topics are single stage and the deadline for submission of proposals is 4 April 2018.

Call: 2018-2020 Mobility for growth

Transport is changing at an accelerating pace as a result of several factors in many diverse but interconnected fields. In order to address these new challenges, targeted efforts are needed to develop and validate new solutions that can be rapidly deployed. They will address in a systemic way means of transport, infrastructure and operation models and integrate them into a user friendly European transport system of smart connected mobility for passengers and freight with significantly reduced impact on climate and environment.

Call: 2018-2020 Digitising and Transforming European Industry and Services: Automated Road Transport

The previous call on “Automated Road Transport” in the Transport Work Programme 2016/17 focused on vehicles with functions for automated driving level 3, which are expected to enter the market in the next few years. The overall objective of this call is to promote a wide market introduction of highly automated driving systems towards SAE level 4 (“the driving mode-specific performance by an automated driving system of all aspects of the dynamic driving task, even if a human driver does not respond appropriately to a request to intervene”).

– DT-ART-01-2018: Testing, validation and certification procedures for highly automated driving functions under various traffic scenarios based on pilot test data

Innovate UK: Digital Health Technology Catalyst Open for Applications

As part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, Innovate UK has today issued a call for feasibility studies and industrial research & development projects to address the challenges posed and opportunities offered by digital healthcare:

Digital health is evolving at a rapid pace and this is having a profound impact on healthcare delivery. Digital health uses data and technology to:

  • improve patient outcomes
  • improve access to healthcare
  • make more targeted and personalised health interventions
  • transform service delivery
  • deliver new treatments and translational medicine

The aim of this competition is to speed up the development of new digital solutions to healthcare challenges and grow the industry.

Feasibility studies are smaller scale projects of up to one year for between £50k and £75k. Industrial research and experimental development projects are larger, from £500k – £1M and for up to 3 years. Different levels of grant are available to businesses depending on the type of research and size of the company.

Both types of project should be led by a UK-based SME. A business can be involved in up to 3 applications but may only lead on one.

Research organisations can participate as collaborators, but are limited to 50% of the total project costs. In addition all projects must show how they will improve the competitiveness and productivity for at least one UK SME invovled in the project.

A briefing webinar is taking place tomorrow, 1st August, and the competition closes to applications on 11th October.

Innovate UK: Innovation in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) systems

Innovate UK have released a call on innovation in vehicle-to-grid systems:

So-called vehicle-to-grid technologies are expected to play a big part in making the UK’s electricity supply network smarter and in encouraging take-up.

Vehicles that can take electricity from the grid when demand is low and return it when demand is high could help to even out peaks and troughs and make the grid more efficient.

The UK government wants nearly all cars to be zero emission by 2050, and it sees a smarter and more flexible electricity system as a major benefit to consumers and a key to future growth.

The scheme comes in three variants: feasibility studies (total costs: £125k – £225k, up to 1 year duration); collaborative research and development (£375k – £1.5M, 18 months to 3 years); and real-world demonstrators (£1.5M – £7M, up to 3 years).

All types of project must be led by a business, though research organisations can participate in any of the three types of project as long as their costs do not exceed 30% of the overall costs.

There is a briefing event on 9th August in London and a brokerage event on 17th August. Applications must be submitted by 18th October.

Several of the calls have restrictions on the number which can be submitted by the host institution, and these are marked with an asterisk (*). AHRC/EPSRC: Research and Partnership Development call for the Next Generation of Immersive Experiences

AHRC and EPSRC have recently announced a call to develop a research programme to bring together organisations within the creative economy with researchers from both the arts and humanities communities and beyond:

Research and Partnership Development call for the Next Generation of Immersive Experiences

“This is not a technology-only research programme, nor one exploring interfaces but a programme to explore the new technology-enabled, multi-sensory, narrative, interpretative, and performance experiences that will drive future creative and commercial value. This will require interdisciplinary working between the Arts and Humanities and other disciplines from Psychology to Engineering, and inter-sector working between researchers, creative practitioners, and businesses.”

They would like proposals addressing this call to focus on:

  • Memory – how can new immersive experiences extend the access, interpretation and reach of memorybased institutions such as museum, galleries, archives and collections?
  • Place – what new experiences can be created by the combination of immersive technology and place based services?
  • Performance – what new creative practices are enabled by immersive technology, what new experiences can be offered to audiences and how can this transform or extend models of performance?

Applications are invited for a total full economic costs of up to £75,000 and lasting between 6 and 9 months. The deadline for proposals is 5th October 2017. Full details are given in the call document.
