Developing your Academic Writing

By the end of this session participants will have examined some of the barriers to writing, developed their time management skills to develop a writing plan, used a number of techniques to develop their writing style and completed exercises to develop their academic writing.

Bringing Impact to Life

19th October 2016, 2pm-3pm

Open to Students at any stage.

In order to win funding, research funders expect you to demonstrate the impact of your research, and the Research Excellence Framework also assesses the impact of research outside academia. This session will give an overview of research impact and some of the routes to creating it. It will also present some examples to show how other researchers have captured and presented the impact of their research on the economy, society, culture, public policy and elsewhere.

Lab Demonstrator Training

21st October 2016, 1pm – 3pm

For any Postgraduate Research Students who are supporting Undergraduate Students doing lab work.

By the end of this session participants will have considered the roles and responsibilities of being a demonstrator and have an understanding of health and safety guidelines relevant to this role.

Doctoral Dilemmas: Getting Started

Date – Monday 10th October 2016

Time – 11:30am – 1:30pm

Open to Students in their first year.

Doctoral Dilemmas aims to explore the issues often not covered in formal training or supervision. Questions panels will cover consist of issues such as how do you get started? How do you keep going? How do I know when I have done enough? How do I prepare for the viva? The format is an invited student panel discussing doctoral problems with the audience followed by networking opportunities
