If you are a Northumbria researcher in a STEM-based discipline you may be aware of the HEFCE-funded Think Physics programme, based in the University’s Faculty of Engineering and Environment, which aims to support young people to choose STEM subjects at A-level and beyond, particularly young women and girls. Think Physics can work with you to create a bespoke workshop or other activity to engage schoolchildren and/or the general public in your research.
What does Think Physics do?
Think Physics develops and runs workshops and activities in primary and secondary schools, which link cutting edge science research with the curriculum. The team also works with those who influence young people; parents, carers, teachers and the wider public. Think Physics liaises with schools and local authorities to support family science learning; they collaborate with, and co-curate exhibitions in, art galleries, museums and other venues, and they take part in city centre events to show the relevance of studying physics (and science).
Why should I work with Think Physics?
- The Think Physics team has excellent links with many local primary and secondary schools, as well as other stakeholders e.g. local councils, Centre for Life, Institute of Physics.
- The team also has staff with expertise and experience in developing and delivering engaging workshops in schools and at public science events.
- You can work with Think Physics to create a “pathway to impact” for a research project you are carrying out.
- You can cost Think Physics activities into some research grants where they are clearly linked to the research and are a means of achieving impact (contact your Pre-Award Coordinator for more advice).
