We have organised them around the poetic arc of From the Shadows…, a poem we generated through human–AI collaboration. We intentionally trained Claude.Ai on our theme and our concepts of shadows. This is to illustrate how new technologies deliver new kinds of services and functions both as a provocation and a reality-check for ServDes2027. Each pair of tracks corresponds to a stanza, tracing a journey from seeing to courage to vibrancy to emergence.

I. Every outline carved by absence, every form defined by distance between the brightness and the void.

Shadows give form, definition, and meaning. We need them to see clearly. These two tracks ask: what becomes visible when we look at the outlines services cast and the absences that shape them?

Track 1 – Shadows of Power: Governance, Democracy & Accountability

Power structures are the outlines that shape services. These structures are carved by what is absent as much as what is present. The distance between who holds influence – and who does not – defines the very form that services take.

This track examines how configurations of power and capability shape service design practice, from stakeholder dynamics and more-than-human actors to civic participation and democratic oversight. As boundaries between public and private provision blur, and as institutional trust erodes, we ask: how does service design navigate the shadows cast by governance, politics, and accountability? When does transparency serve people, and when do shadow structures undermine the democratic foundations of public services?

We welcome contributions exploring power dynamics in service design processes, the shifting landscape of public-private service provision, participatory and deliberative approaches to service governance, and the relationship between service design and policymaking.

Track 2 – Shadows in Translation: Culture, Knowledge & Diverse Ways of Knowing

Every form is defined by distance (temporal, geographical, generational, etc.). What one culture places in the light, another may recognise only through its absence. Service design approaches travel globally but translate unevenly, carrying assumptions about what constitutes a “service” that can overshadow other ways of understanding provision, exchange, and care.

This track surfaces the outlines that dominant frameworks fail to see: kinship responsibility, reciprocal exchange, social obligation, and community networks as legitimate and sophisticated forms of service. It invites contributions that challenge Western-centric definitions and expand how we collectively understand what services are, who they serve, and what forms they take across cultural contexts.

We welcome contributions that bring diverse epistemologies into dialogue with service design, that examine how methods and practices translate (or fail to translate) across contexts, and that propose alternative framings of service grounded in specific cultural traditions.

II. These two tracks honour those who step toward edges: the opacity of algorithmic systems, the precarity of care work, the vulnerability of underfunded services.

Track 3 – Algorithmic Shadows: AI, Automation & Human Dignity

AI represents the edge of what we cannot fully know. It presents an opaque system that makes consequential decisions in spaces where accountability becomes obscured. As automated decision-making, predictive analytics, and generative AI become embedded in service delivery, they cast new shadows that demand new forms of courage: the courage to insist on transparency, to challenge algorithmic authority, and to reimagine human–AI collaboration on terms that preserve dignity and agency.

This track explores how service design can illuminate algorithmic processes, address bias and exclusion in automated systems, and secure lifelong access to services in times of digitalisation. It also turns the lens inward, asking (as the conference call itself does) what it means when AI authors the very texts that frame our inquiry.

We welcome contributions on accountability and transparency in AI-mediated services, bias and exclusion in automated systems, human–AI collaboration in service contexts, digital access and inclusion, and critical reflections on AI’s role in service design itself.

Track 4 – Shadows of Care: Valuing the Invisible Labour that Sustains Services

Care workers, community volunteers, and charitable organisations step up every day to provide essential, often life-saving work under precarious funding and shifting regulations. Their contributions and emotional strains often remain invisible to society and institutions while their economic roles are being downplayed.

This track brings into the light the labour that sustains services yet remains systematically unacknowledged: emotional labour, community volunteering, informal care networks, and the work of voluntary and charitable organisations operating in competitive, short-term funding environments. It asks how service design can illuminate and properly value this essential work, creating frameworks that recognise care as fundamental infrastructure rather than invisible overhead.

We welcome contributions from and about the voluntary and charitable sector, care economies and informal service provision, the ethics of care as a foundation for service design, and approaches to sustaining essential services under conditions of scarcity and precarity.

III. Contrast reveals vibrancy, urgency, and the full spectrum of experience. These two tracks explore how the specific pressures of place and planet become sharper and more vivid when seen against the grey of assumed universality and lost ecological abundance.

Track 5 – Shadows of Place: Urban, Rural & Coastal Landscapes

Shadows are omnipresent in urban, coastal, and rural environments. In each context, the colours of local experience contrast with the grey of one-size-fits-all service design. Cities concentrate both opportunity and inequality; rural communities rich in social capital face the hollowing out of high streets and talent flight; coastal areas navigate climate vulnerability, shifting economies, and seasonal pressures.

This track examines how place shapes service needs and how service design can respond to the distinct settings of where people actually live. It challenges urban-centric assumptions in methodology and practice and asks how design can foster equitable, liveable, and resilient futures across diverse geographies.

We welcome contributions on urban service challenges including gentrification, segregation, and infrastructure strain; rural service design and place-based economies; coastal community resilience and climate adaptation; and methodological innovations for place-sensitive service design.

Track 6 – Ecological Shadows: Regeneration Beyond Sustainability

Environmental degradation casts a growing shadow over diminishing ecosystems, resource draining consumption, and the hope for a better future. But against that grey backdrop, regenerative approaches offer a return to a (new?) baseline and an active restoration that facilitates ecological and social flourishing.

This track explores the environmental shadows cast by service delivery and asks how service design can move beyond minimising harm toward genuinely regenerative practice. Every service has ecological impacts; this track asks how we illuminate them honestly while pioneering approaches that restore rather than merely sustain.
We welcome contributions on the ecological footprint of services and service systems, regenerative design approaches, the relationship between environmental and social flourishing, and frameworks for integrating ecological responsibility into service design practice.

IV. They become knowledge, resilience, and wisdom. These final two tracks look to the future to explore how the lived experience of exclusion and complexity can be transformed into resources for more inclusive services and more thoughtful practice.

Track 7 – Grey Spaces: Inclusion, Exclusion & Designing Against Polarisation

We emerge from shadows not unmarked means that we carry the memory of exclusion, bias, and division with us. This track occupies the grey spaces between light and dark to examine how service design can honour the knowledge that comes from navigating shadows while actively working against the forces that create them.
Service design holds potential to bridge divides, yet can inadvertently create or reinforce exclusion. Algorithmic biases, tokenistic participation, and designs that serve some communities all come at the expense of ‘some others’. In a polarised world, this track critically examines both pitfalls and promising practices, asking how we ensure services reduce rather than aggravate polarisation.

We welcome contributions on inclusive and anti-oppressive service design, the dynamics of exclusion and belonging in service systems, designing across difference and division, and critical examinations of service design’s own role in reproducing inequality.

Track 8 – Educating in the Shadows: Pedagogy for Complexity & Contested Values

The poem ends with emergence when the journey from night breaks into day. Can we carry our hard-won knowledge forward? If educating the next generation of service designers means preparing them not to avoid shadows but to navigate them with skill, reflexivity, and ethical grounding, how are we going about it?

This track explores how we equip students and practitioners to work with complexity, ambiguity, and contested values. It invites examples of sustaining thoughtful service design work in challenging contexts rather than retreating to formulaic methods or false certainties. It asks what educational innovations, critical pedagogies, and reflective practices can help future designers carry the memory of difficulty as a resource rather than a burden.

We welcome contributions on service design education and curriculum innovation, critical and reflective pedagogies, practitioner development and lifelong learning, and approaches to teaching in and through uncertainty.

We look forward to contributions that engage thoughtfully and critically with the pluralities and opportunities that designing in the shadows means in a polarised world.

TRACKS Jump to section I.SeeingII.CourageIII.VibrancyIV.Emergence “Designing in the Shadows – Places and Practices of Service Design in a Polarised World” […]

["post-1832","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.4 -
