Throughout a series of workshops and interviews, we worked with more than 60 individuals, including more than 30 people with lived experience, across 20 support services in the North East, London, Cardiff, and Ohio, USA. This work took place across two key phases of work:

Learning from existing advocacy services and exploring opportunities for the North East. We facilitated three collage-making workshops in London, Cardiff, and Newcastle. We also facilitated an online discussion among support services in Ohio, USA. In these workshops, we learned from organisations and individuals who are already implementing various advocacy models and discussed what skills and attributes an IRCPA would need to have. We explored risks and opportunties of peer-led and professional-led models, and also developed an understanding of the possible situation of advocates within the existing care ecosystem in the North East.

Co-Designing the Women’s Wellbeing Compass. Working with 15 women with lived experience of recovery and involvement with care proceedings, we designed an activity book that we have called the Women’s Wellbeing Compass. This is an activity book that encourages support worker (and ideally advocates, once implemented) to ask mothers in reocvery who are going through care proceedings simple yet difficult to answer questions about her experience. The intention is that this booklet is simultaneously a space for the woman to reflect about these questions while also being a tool that enables a well-trained support worker or advocate to translate the woman’s experiences and needs into language that is respected in difficult to navigate care proceedings meetings.

Alongside this work, we have been working with individuals and organistions across the region to explore ways of implementing independent advocacy for families with a parent in recovery who are going through care proceedings. This has included the development of an implementation model, conversations about service-level implementation of advocates, and has surfaced training opportunities from existing advocacy organistions in other regions of the UK.

Our report is currently in production. The Women’s Wellbeing Compass will be shared publicly soon.

The project was carried out by Laurie Parker and Dr Angelika Strohmayer, with support from Jess Burns at Ridley Villas. It was funded by Innovate UK, with contributions from Changing Lives.

    <div class="elementor-element elementor-element-521a3ed
